Safety engineering in potentially explosive atmospheres
What is ATEX? In the EU, all explosion-proof equipment and systems fall under the ATEX Directive. This includes anything used within, or in conjunction with potentially explosive atmospheres such as safety, control and regulation devices and protective components, equipment and systems.
Machinery and equipment manufacturers, their authorised representatives, importers, or any persons responsible for placing a product on the market, must ensure that equipment falling under the ATEX Directive (2014/34/EU) prevents, or limits the impact to an adequate level of safety, an ignition of explosive atmospheres. As a visible sign of compliance with ATEX, the CE marking must be affixed to the equipment.
On a global scale, the IECEx system facilitates international trade in equipment and services for use in explosive atmospheres.
