The new European Union Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU is now the required method to show compliance for radio and telecoms equipment (as of 13th June 2017), and fully replaces the old Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive (R&TTE).
As the scope of the RED differs from the R&TTE, and the essential requirements have also been changed, additional standards are required and existing ones must be amended. The European Telecommunications Standards Institute’s (ETSI) has developed Harmonised European Standards, which are the preferred means for manufacturers to comply with the RED essential requirements.
Manufacturers of 5GHz Radio Local Area Network (RLAN) equipment, such as routers, mobile phones, tablets and computers, must now use the RED in their Declaration of Conformity. This applies to both new products and radio equipment previously conforming to the R&TTE Directive, if they are to be continued to be placed on the market within the European Union (EU).
EN 301 893 V2.1.1 is now cited in the RED Official Journal (OJ) of the European Union and is mandatory from 12/06/2018. Manufacturers have been encountering specific problems with the adaptivity requirements of this version of the specification, and for this reason there is a transition period in the RED OJ. As specified in the RED OJ, up until 12/06/2018 manufacturers can use either Clause 4.2.7 of EN 301 893 V2.1.1 (adaptivity requirements) or the Clause 4.2.7 (adaptivity requirements) of the previous R&TTE version of the specification EN 301 893 V1.8.1.
The European Commission has published several Harmonised Standards lists for the RED in the Official Journal (OJ) and is updating it as necessary. For an up to date list please click here.
