TÜV SÜD has expanded its range of services in the Rail Energy area. In January 2013, TÜV SÜD integrated a leading global engineering company in the area of railway energy supply into the TÜV SÜD Group. With this acquisition, Rail Energy also has access to the verified software tools of the ELBAS Company. The new services range from consulting and project planning to testing and certification.
Modern traction power supply system concepts for the future
Around the world, modern railway systems are indispensable for both rail freight transport and passenger services over long and short distances. One of the most important elements for the future of railway systems is an efficient traction power supply system. This not only includes the reliability and the performance, but, especially, the reduction of the energy demand, of CO2 emissions and the use of renewable energy sources. With the acquisition of ELBAS, TÜV SÜD acknowledges this development and is building its scope of competencies with a view toward sustainable, complete solutions for the rail sector.
ELBAS becomes SIGNON
With the acquisition of ELBAS, TÜV SÜD has added a leading international consulting and engineering company to its corporate group. Emphasis is on electric traction equipment and catenary systems, command-control and safety technology, earthing and the return circuit, electric railway secondary structures, rolling stock, telecommunications and magnetic levitation railways. ELBAS was founded in 1991 and acquired by KEMA in 2009. In August 2013, ELBAS merged with the TÜV SÜD-owned SIGNON company. The combined company operates under the name SIGNON Deutschland GmbH with headquarters in Berlin.
Competencies and Tools
With the addition of around 60 specialists from ELBAS, TÜV SÜD not only adds competencies in the area of rail power supply but also profits from a highly motivated and experienced team located in Dresden, Berlin and Zurich. The range of services is comprehensive and includes all stages from project planning to certification. For all services, TÜV SÜD Rail Energy uses the verified software tools from ELBAS. The simulation programs ELBAS-SINANET® and ELBAS-WEBANET allow for the integrative calculation of railway operation through simulation of train runnings and simultaneous, iterative, electrical load flow calculations for the railway power supply network. In planning contact lines for both long and short distance transport, TÜV SÜD uses ELBAS OLACAD, a contact line design tool.
