With a population of approximately 1.4 trillion people, China is the most populated country in the world. Providing nutritious food for its people is an important priority for the country, and government regulators are working purposefully to establish minimum food safety regulations that are applicable to both locally-produced and imported food and food products. However, as in most countries, fraudulent and substandard food is a major concern for regulators and legitimate food producers alike.
TÜV SÜD has established a major presence in Greater China, with more than 30 locations and six state-of-the-art laboratories positioned throughout the country. Headquartered in Shanghai, TÜV SÜD’s Food, Health and Beauty (FHB) group is one of the company’s largest and fastest growing divisions in China, working with food producers and importers throughout the country to help ensure the safety and health of food and food products.
Here are just some of the key developments and opportunities ahead for FHB in China:
Major investments — TÜV SÜD will invest more than 2 million EUR over the next three years on a significant expansion of its FHB laboratory facility in Shanghai. Specific investments will include an upgrade of the current food chemical and microbiological testing capabilities, Additionally, major investments will be made in advanced testing instrumentation to help TÜV SÜD maintain its technical dominance in food safety testing and to extend its overall testing capacity.
An additional half million EUR investment is planned for TÜV SÜD’s laboratory facility in Qingdao, a major seaport and industrial centre located on the eastern coast of China in Shandong Province. Specific areas targeted for investment here include advanced testing instruments and equipment, and an upgrade of the current microbiological testing laboratory.
Expansion of capabilities — TÜV SÜD is in the middle of a multi-year plan to significantly expand its testing and service capabilities throughout Greater China. Specific market segments targeted for expansion include food and feed additives and allergens, as well as cosmetics and personal care products and anti-microbial and medical devices. The goal is to achieve dominance in these and other market segments, leading to an overall competitive advantage across all FHB services, and a dramatic increase in its share of FHB services in the Chinese market by the year 2020.
Strategic alliances — As part of the overall effort to build capacity and regional presence, TÜV SÜD FHB has recently received government approval for a joint venture with the Kangda Group, a major industrial corporation based in Qingdao with multiple commercial operations throughout. The joint venture will enable TÜV SÜD FHB to leverage the testing and service capabilities of the Kangda Group in Qingdao, allowing the company to establish a strong foundation for future growth in the region.
Other efforts — TÜV SÜD is continually identifying and evaluating new opportunities for further expansion of its FHB services in China.
The primary focus behind every one of these efforts is to establish a reputation among China’s producers and suppliers for superior technology, unparalleled quality and competitive pricing for FHB testing and services.
