As a result of an authorisation review for a new plant protection product, the Commission of the European Union (EU) has amended the maximum residual level (MRL) applicable to the chemical thiacloprid.
Annex II of EU Regulation (EC) No 396/2005 sets MRL for pesticides in or on food and feed of plant and animal origin. As part of a request to authorise a new plant pesticide containing thiacloprid, the applicant also requested a modification of the current MRL for thiacloprid in honey and other apiculture products.
According to the Commission, the applicant submitted studies demonstrating that modified levels of thiacloprid did not pose a safety risk to consumer or animal safety. These studies and the applicant’s recommendation were subsequently reviewed by the European Food Safety Authority and accepted.
The modification to the MRL for thiacloprid has been enacted through Commission Regulation (EU) 2016/1355, which amends Annex II of Regulation 396/2005. The full text of the Regulation is available here.
