The nutrition labelling guidelines of the Codex Alimentarius have recently been revised to reflect updates of the nutrient reference values (NRVs) for certain vitamins and minerals.
The revised “Guidelines on Nutrition Labelling", CAC/GL 2-1985, includes updated NRVs for the following nutrients:
- Vitamin C — 100 mg
- Zinc — 11 mg (30 percent dietary absorption) and 14 mg (22 percent dietary absorption)
- Selenium — 60 µg
- Manganese — 3 mg
- Molybdenum — 45 µg
- Potassium — 3500 mg
The purpose of the Guidelines is to ensure labelling uniformity among food producers, so that consumers can make informed food choices consistent with their nutritional preferences. Manufacturers can be expected to revise their nutritional labels to conform with the updated NRVs and to ensure continued compliance with the Guidelines.
