Xiamen is a major industrial city on the south-eastern coast of China, with a long history as a major international trading port. European traders first visited Xiamen in the sixteenth century, which later became China's main tea exporting centre in the nineteenth century.
Historically known as Amoy, it was one of the five ‘treaty ports’ established by the British in 1842 with the Treaty of Nanking, which also ceded Hong Kong to the United Kingdom. Consequently, large communities of Chinese who originally resided in Xiamen and the surrounding Fujian province now live overseas.
Xiamen was opened to foreign investment and trade in 1980 as part of the Government’s economic reforms. As a Special Economic Zone, Xiamen’s economic policies and flexible governmental measures are designed to encourage foreign trade. Its primary economic activities include leather tanning and textiles.
Xiamen also hosts the annual China International Fair for Investment and Trade. It was ranked in 2006 as China's second ‘most suitable city for living’, as well as the country’s ‘most romantic leisure city’ in 2011.
