On 4 February 2016, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan notified the World Trade Organisation (WTO) that Japan will amend the Specifications and Standards for Food, Food Additives, etc. under Food Sanitation Act.
- The proposed date of adoption will be, as soon as after the comment period from the WTO members, in the beginning of April 2016.
- The proposed amendment will enter into force after a transition period. The period is not specified in the Notification.
- The amendment is to establish specifications and standards for utensils, containers, and packaging made of synthetic resins whose main component is polyethylene naphthalate (PEN).
- Table 1 shows the summary of the requirements for PEN.
