On 8 June 2016, the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW) of Japan published Notice No. 245 of 2016 to amend the Specifications and Standards for Food, Food Additives, etc under Food Sanitation Act. Notice No. 245 of 2016 adopted the proposed changes that were reported earlier in E-ssentials Vol. 3 of 2016 and it will become effective on 8 December 2016.
The Notice established specifications and standards for utensils, containers, and packaging made of synthetic resins whose main component is polyethylene naphthalate (PEN). It also specified that PEN is considered as a main component when the content of polyethylene naphthalate in the polymer is 50% or more. The details of the requirements are shown in Table 1.
