Business Challenges

Founded just 30 years ago in 1987 by Ren Zhengfei, the son of two Chinese middle school teachers, Huawei Technologies Company Ltd. is today a global information and communications technology (ICT) enterprise, with worldwide annual sales of more than $60 billion (USD). The company’s products are sold in over 170 countries, with an effective reach of more than one-third of the world’s total population. Huawei’s reputation among consumers for quality products was affirmed in 2014 when it became the first brand based in mainland China to rank in Interbrand’s Annual Top 100 Best Global Brands Report.

As a company, Huawei is committed to maintaining its industry-leading position through continuous innovation and providing its customers with advanced, future-proof technologies. However, in planning for the development of its new Fit line of smart watches, Huawei executives recognised that the highly competitive market for smart watches and other wearable devices would accept nothing less than products offering state-of-the-art features while also meeting consumers’ expectations regarding performance, durability and overall safety. Therefore, an important challenge facing the company was to identify a method to independently verify the quality and safety features of the new Fit line products, one that would also be readily recognised and accepted by knowledgeable consumers around the world.

Huawei is committed to maintaining its industry-leading position through continuous innovation and providing its customers with advanced, future-proof technologies.

TÜV SÜD's solutions

Since the year 2000, Huawei has partnered with TÜV SÜD for the testing and certification of its ICT devices for compliance with regulatory requirements in key target markets. This long-term relationship was founded on TÜV SÜD extensive knowledge of global regulatory requirements applicable to electronic devices, as well as its worldwide network of testing laboratories. Over time, the partnership with TÜV SÜD has helped Huawei streamline the regulatory approval process for new products, providing the company with an important competitive advantage in bringing advanced technologies to consumers around the world.

As planning began in 2015 for the new Fit line of smart watches, representatives from TÜV SÜD engaged with Huawei product managers and engineers to better understand the testing and certification requirements for these new products. Specifically, TÜV SÜD engineers conducted a comprehensive assessment that included safety considerations of the products in an effort to address regulatory concerns. But, as part of its “safety beyond compliance” assessment, TÜV SÜD engineers also evaluated critical performance characteristics that Huawei deemed essential in gaining consumer acceptance.

Based on this assessment, TÜV SÜD recommended that Huawei undertake testing to assess compliance with the requirements of TÜV SÜD’s Wearables certification mark. Testing for Wearables certification includes testing for safety critical issues, including electrical safety testing, mechanical testing, and testing for the presence of chemicals and other potentially hazardous materials. TÜV SÜD’s Wearables product testing also include performance and reliability testing, such as battery lifecycle testing, wireless testing and other performance-related tests appropriate to a given device.

Ultimately, Huawei agreed to seek TÜV SÜD Wearables certification for its new Fit model MES-B19. After undergoing weeks of evaluation in accordance with this rigorous testing protocol, Huawei’s Fit model MES-B19 wearable was awarded TÜV SÜD’s Wearables certification, making Huawei the first company in the Asia-Pacific region to achieve TÜV SÜD Wearables certification for its products.

TÜV SÜD engaged with Huawei product managers and engineers to better understand the testing and certification requirements for these new products.

Business benefits

For Huawei, TÜV SÜD’s Wearables certification is expected to give its new Fit line increased visibility with consumers around the world. The TÜV SÜD Mark is globally recognised as an important verification of a product’s safety, and TÜV SÜD’s Wearables certification Mark expanded focus on “safety beyond compliance” provides consumers with additional assurances regarding a product’s quality, safety and performance. In highly-competitive markets, these additional assurances can provide a company with important strategic advantages.

At the same time, TÜV SÜD’s Wearables certification is consistent with Huawei’s reputation for bringing advanced technologies to consumers that meet both safety and performance expectations. “We’re excited about the potential advantages that TÜV SÜD’s Wearable certification will give our new Fit line in the market,” says Mr. Salen Yao, Consumer BG R&D Senior Engineer. “But, from our perspective, the greater benefit is the alignment between what the Wearables certification stands for and our company’s philosophy and values. We want our products to embody those values, and TÜV SÜD Wearables certification helps us to achieve that alignment.”
