Hexavalent Chromium (VI) Testing
Comprehensive testing solutions and quality assurance to ensure product safety
Driven by a growing middle class, the global demand for leather and leather goods is on the rise. This rising demand has been matched by greater regulation, most notably in the European Union (EU), where all consumer products are covered by REACH; an EU regulation concerning the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals. To ensure ongoing compliance and customer goodwill, companies must adhere to stringent standards concerning the minimisation of Chromium (VI) and other restricted substances in all leather products.
What is Chromium (VI)?
Chromium (VI), also known as Hexavalent Chromium, can be an undesirable by-product of chrome leather tanning. It can be formed in leather through the oxidation of Chromium (III) compounds that occur within or after the tanning process from inadequate chemical treatment during finishing or due to environmental conditions. Chromium (VI) is allergenic and can lead to contact dermatitis if it comes into contact with sensitised skin. Certain Chromium (VI) compounds are classified as carcinogenic, primarily if inhaled. Aside from the impact of Chromium (VI) on people and the environment, businesses are also directly affected by regulations prohibiting its presence in tanned leather.
Why is Chromium (VI) testing important?
Testing your products for Chromium (VI) can prevent unsafe products from reaching the market. By testing your products, you can maintain your competitive edge and avoid the pitfalls of non-compliance including harm to consumers, costly product recalls, potential litigation and the associated negative publicity.
