TÜV SÜD Czech opens DYCOT testing laboratory for OEMs in Central and Eastern Europe
TÜV SÜD has opened a new design and development laboratory for OEMs in the Czech Republic. In the dynamic component testing (DYCOT) laboratory, the TÜV SÜD experts can carry out sled tests to examine vehicle components for their compliance with all legal requirements. This test method is a cost-efficient alternative to crash tests. This new testing facility in the Czech town of Mladá Boleslav represents further expansion of TÜV SÜD’s range of services for OEMs in the Czech Republic, sending out a clear signal that the company plans to be the leading OEM partner in Central and Eastern Europe.
“Our aim of being a long-term professional and innovative partner for the automotive industry in Central and Eastern Europe is now stronger than ever”, affirms Alexander Kraus, Senior Vice President Business Unit Automotive TÜV SÜD. The company’s plans reflect the continuously increasing pressure to achieve shorter and shorter development cycles and lower costs for new cars. Effective methods of tackling these challenges include simulation and non-destructive testing. Numerous dynamic tests of individual components, such as seats, safety belts or airbags, are necessary during the design and development of a new car. Although crash tests are a suitable solution, they are also a very expensive and time-consuming one. “Our DYCOT service offers vehicle manufacturers a solution that saves them both time and money”, explains Kraus. Instead of destroying entire car bodies in crash tests within the scope of component testing, DYCOT relies on sled tests with hydraulic catapults. “The deceleration curves are virtually identical to the results obtained in destructive testing”, emphasises Kraus.
Tests at the customer’s premises
Conventional sled tests are a tried-and-tested method and have been used by TÜV SÜD at its own facilities for years. They offer the advantage that tests can be repeated after only a few minutes, for example to test a second specimen or examine the modification of a component. However, a new aspect is the cutting-edge concept of DYCOT, which allows the test equipment to be adjusted even more precisely and flexibly to the customer's needs. Kraus notes, “Other industries such as the aerospace sector are also interested in these dynamic simulations“.
Locations in the Czech Republic
TÜV SÜD has been carrying out safety, emission and compliance (homologation) testing in the Czech Republic since 1995. The service portfolio of its testing laboratory in Mladá Boleslav includes numerous static tests such as the testing of electronic components and airbags. Noise measurements and strength tests are also available. “The laboratory's strategic location in Mladá Boleslav and the focus of all laboratory activities at a single location make a key contribution to our laboratory's efficiency”, says Kraus. The laboratory supports automotive manufacturers during the design and development stage. But that’s not all; compliance testing (homologation) and conformity of production (COP) also form part of the services offered by TÜV SÜD.
