54 new hydrogen refuelling stations worldwide in 2015
54 new hydrogen refuelling stations have opened throughout the world in 2015. As of January 2016, the total number of hydrogen refuelling stations in operation is 214. This is the result of the eighth annual assessment by H2stations.org, a website of Ludwig-Bölkow-Systemtechnik (LBST) and TÜV SÜD. Several countries are pursuing concrete plans to develop an increasingly dense hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. In 2015, significant progress has been made.
48 of the 54 stations opened in 2015 are publicly accessible. The others are dedicated to refuelling of buses or reserved for fleet customers. All of the 7 new stations in North America provide for public access. 6 are located in California and one in Colorado. Top of the list is Japan with 28 new public stations. In Europe, 19 stations have been opened, thereof 4 in Germany, increasing the number of hydrogen refuelling stations in Germany to 34, 21 of which are publicly accessible. Based on information available to LBST, a total of 95 hydrogen refuelling stations are currently operating in Europe, 50 in North America, one in South America, one in Australia, and 67 in Asia. There are 121 stations worldwide with public access.
Sites for a further 104 stations have already been announced (35 in the USA, 5 in Japan, and 64 in Europe, 34 of which are in Germany) with more to follow. Within Europe, Germany has the largest number of hydrogen refuelling stations (34), followed by Great Britain (14), Denmark and France (9 each), and Norway (6). Whereas the French stations are dedicated to selected fleet customers, most stations in the other countries are accessible to the public.
Interactive maps and individual analyses
The website H2stations.org (www.H2stations.org) uses interactive maps to globally list all hydrogen refuelling stations in operation, planned, or already shut down including a summary on recent changes. With its information on already closed stations, H2stations.org is unique in also providing a view on the development history of the hydrogen infrastructure.
The website draws on a database which is continuously updated with new stations as well as with new information on already existing sites, all in all it currently comprising detailed information on about 644 refuelling stations. "In spite of the substantial efforts involved in collecting the data, we provide it on the website free of charge for non-commercial use", says LBST Managing Director Uwe Albrecht.
"Professional users are able to license the data including further detailed information, regular reports on new developments, and individual analyses.” Quarterly updated figures on hydrogen refuelling stations in relevant countries, along with up to date news on markets and hydrogen technologies are available to subscribers on a quarterly basis as part of the LBST service "Market Cockpit Hydrogen".

TÜV SÜD and LBST operate a joint hydrogen and fuel-cell portal www.netinform.de/H2 offering extensive information and services for professional users and interested members of the public.
