The UK team at TÜV SÜD Product Service plays a pivotal role across the TÜV SÜD global telecoms network, as their expertise is often called upon by other businesses within the Group.
Its experts have specialist knowledge in a broad range of industries in which telecommunications equipment is frequently used. With an in-depth understanding of the market pressures that their clients face, the team is completely focused on ensuring that they have the competitive edge, with the certifications to uphold it.
Jean-Louis Evans, Managing Director of TÜV SÜD’s UK Product Service division, explains, “For our team there is no such thing as a problem, only an opportunity to find a solution. We are often called upon by others within the TÜV SÜD Group as we have such in-depth understanding of the full spectrum of telecoms technologies and standards requirements. This means that TÜV SÜD can deliver a local service, wherever we are in the world, backed up by the very best expertise and advice.”
TÜV SÜD BABT
The UK organisation also has in TÜV SÜD BABT one of the world’s leading radio and telecommunications certification bodies. With 30 years of experience in telecoms certification, TÜV SÜD BABT can certify products against the regulatory requirements of the European Union, USA, Canada and Japan.
TÜV SÜD BABT is contracted by the GSM Association to allocate IMEIs and administer its IMEI database. This includes the registration of companies onto the IMEI database and the allocation of TAC numbers. The team also manages MasterCard’s TQM programme, which ensures the consistent quality of payment terminals used by vendors across the world.
As the UK’s leading assessor of metering and billing systems, TÜV SÜD BABT offers a range of services to ensure that telecoms operators’ billing systems, and those functions that support them, are both accurate and meet relevant regulatory requirements. TÜV SÜD BABT is the leading Approval Body under the UK Ofcom Metering and Billing Approval scheme.
One stop shop
While it now offers a wide range of services across a broad spectrum of industries, TÜV SÜD Product Service’s UK roots are in testing and certifying mobile phone manufacturers’ products. To support manufacturers in a highly competitive market, the team offers a one-stop-shop service including RF, SAR, EMC and safety testing.
Jean-Louis continues, “The benefit of having all of these services under one roof is that the time it takes to complete the entire test and certification service can be minimised. As our team work closely together, the process appears seamless to our clients as their products are assessed to meet a wide variety of standards and directives. The mobile phone market is incredibly competitive and, by helping our clients minimise the time their products spend in the test lab, we can give them a competitive edge.”
TÜV SÜD is also able to support clients on their own site by providing offsite testing services for larger equipment, or for equipment such as base stations that requires specialist test platforms. The UK team has travelled all over the world to deliver this, including China, Continental Europe, Japan and North America.
Beyond handset manufacturers, TÜV SÜD Product Service has a proven pedigree in supporting a wide range of industries.
The team has been active in testing marine products for over 15 years, providing a complete service for specialist products such as radar, radio beacons and Automatic Identification Systems (AIS). This goes beyond radio communications testing to encompass the full range of environmental and EMC testing that is required to take products to market.
As TÜV SÜD BABT is a Notified Body under the European Union’s Marine Equipment Directive, the teams’ close relationship with each other means that clients only have one single point of contact at TÜV SÜD throughout the entire test and certification process. This helps the process to be more cost effective and reduces a client’s own time spent managing activities.
The UK team always ensures that it is up to speed with the latest trends in order to support clients with an effective and well-rounded service. This has included a move into the mobile payments market.
While TÜV SÜD has worked with MasterCard and EMVCo for more than 10 years, it continues to expand the services it offers for next generation payment technologies. This includes the appointment by the NFC Forum to provide its worldwide Radio Frequency (RF) Analog Test Tool Validation Service
Jean-Louis continues, “We plan to offer a wide range of validation services for contactless equipment, which is a natural move for us as we already have a proven pedigree in RF and in delivering services within the payments industry.”
The UK team also recognises the importance of keeping a balance when it comes to experience and enthusiasm. TÜV SÜD therefore recruits apprentices and university placement students each year from a wide variety of backgrounds, with many graduates re-joining the company full time once they have completed their course.
“It’s not just keeping our technological know-how fresh and up to date that is important to us as we also recognise the importance of reflecting that within the make-up of our teams. While we have experts with many years of experience, including those who were with TÜV SÜD at the birth of mobile phone technology, we all recognise the importance of keeping that ‘wise’ element energised with new members of the team,” says Jean-Louis.
TÜV SÜD’s UK experts play a key role in the development of standards within Europe. This includes the recently introduced IEEE 802.11ac standard for wireless equipment operating in the 5GHz band. TÜV SÜD’s early involvement helped it to stay one step ahead of its competitors by launching a Wi-Fi test and certification service to meet the requirements of the new standard.
TÜV SÜD also sits on the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) task group, which is involved in the production of the R&TTE Harmonised Standard, EN 300 328.
“We are extremely proud of the key role that we play within the TÜV SÜD Group across the world. Because the team have such a wealth of experience, they are not only able to meet our clients’ product needs under one roof, they also anticipate technological innovations to help keep our clients’ one step ahead of their competition. It’s their dedication that makes us a world leader within the telecoms industry,” concludes Jean-Louis.
