The WAVE 2014 – a world record, an alpine pass and many winners
Challenge, action and fun: The 2014 edition of the WAVE (World Advanced Vehicle Expedition) trophy was held on 31 May. It was opened by a joint vehicle parade involving 507 electric vehicles, setting a new world record in the Guinness Book of World Records.
After the parade, 75 teams from 12 countries started their nine days endurance rally through a total of nine different alpine regions. The teams covered 1600km and crossed the Furka pass (2450m), finishing off at the city of Rigi in Switzerland last Sunday.
The teams were judged based on various criteria such as efficiency, car aesthetics, and best slalom driving. There were also criteria judging networking abilities and blogging skills to identify the “nicest” team.
WAVE 2014 was the world largest electric vehicle rally, spanning Stuttgart via Munich and Austria to Switzerland. The rally hoped to illustrate that electric mobility is ready for the market, delivering reliable performance even in challenging situations and terrains, such as the conditions the teams faced while crossing the Alps. This view is shared by TÜV SÜD, which supported the rally as a technical partner.
“Together with our Partners Daimler, VW, Bosch and EnBW, we, as TÜV SÜD, agreed to contribute to the WAVE to prove how powerful and capable electric mobility already is today. The special atmosphere of the WAVE is due to the extensive variety of different vehicles involved. From electric bicycles to electrified vintage cars, we saw the whole spectrum of today’s electric mobility options. For me this also displays the wide range of options we have for daily mobility. The goal is for mobility to be 100% based on renewable energies. To achieve this goal, we are collaborating with our clients to ensure safe and reliable products for the global market” says Volker Blandow, head of e-Mobility at TÜV SÜD.
The winners were honored at Seebodenalp / Rigi after nine exciting days. Participants not only gained exposure to electric mobility, but also enjoyed the beautiful landscape, expanded their network and soaked in the team spirit. On top of that, they savored the satisfaction of having actively contributed to the transition towards a cleaner and more sustainable future mobility and being an ambassador of the electric revolution on our roads.
