World Standards Day 2016 is themed ‘Standards Build Trust’. By ensuring standards are met, TÜV SÜD’s actions are inspiring trust in processes, businesses and services.
Held annually on 14 October, World Standards Day is a global event honouring the efforts of experts and stakeholders across the standards community. Working in close collaboration, these people are responsible for preparing and publishing the multitude of standards that enable technological progress and global trade by enhancing quality, safety and sustainability.
Pioneering standards from the very start
TÜV SÜD’s involvement with standards can be traced all the way back to 1881. This was the year that TÜV safety pioneer Walther Gyßling and his contemporaries successfully introduced the first universal standards for the manufacture and inspection of steam boilers. In essence, they defined the basic principals for examining materials used in boiler construction.
Just over a century later, in 1989, our predecessors came up with another revolutionary idea: worldwide approvals. The concept of a worldwide approval system for product certification led to the formation of TÜV Product Service GmbH. Moving beyond the traditional remit of technical supervision societies by offering private sector services for the first time, this new organisation supported businesses that bought and sold products across borders by providing a one-stop solution for worldwide product certification. TÜV SÜD Product Service is now one of the world’s leading experts in product testing and certification.
We continue to uphold standards
For all of us at TÜV SÜD, standards remain central to everything we do. As a leading third-party testing and certification body, we have issued over 574,000 certificates based on a wide range of national and international standards. Beyond determining whether products and services are in accordance with standards, our experts are regularly called upon to participate in the preparation of new standards. In this regard, our expertise is helping to inspire trust in the technologies of tomorrow.
Let’s celebrate World Standards Day 2016
TÜV SÜD’s 150th anniversary is based on the theme ‘Inspiring Trust’. It’s only natural that this aligns closely with the World Standards Day 2016 theme of ‘Standards Build Trust’, given our active association with standards globally. To commemorate World Standards Day 2016 and the important role we play in championing standardisation, we have organised a photo campaign called Cert Mark Selfie. We’re inviting everyone to take part.
Our Cert Mark Selfie campaign aims to highlight the many ways we support the business community, the public sector and society at large. To take part, look for our certification marks in your everyday life – on products, vehicles, signs, stationery, advertisements and other promotional material. Whenever you spot one of our certification marks, capture it in a photo or selfie and post it on social media with the hashtags #speakstandards and #tuvsud150.
